What is the difference between a craftsman of an artist? I think almost all of Peruvian artists in their works that reflect the typical culture of our country are considered craftsmen. Why the difference? Flor, Lima

Flor
a craftsman, learned his job from his father, grandfather or a craft school. In turn, the artists have exhibitions in galleries went to college and graduated in fine arts. Most of painters who makes paintings with traditional culture are considered artisans, if they sell their paintings to tourists.

There are artists who use iconography of the Inca cultures such as Fernando de Szyszlo, Pedro Caballero, Galdos Rivas, Milner Cajahuaringa and Jorge Eielson, but they only use the influence of the Inca culture and creativity is most of their work where each piece is unique. While artisans Inca iconography is greater than the creation of the work done and where most of the pictures seem. In the case of Jorge Eielson is influenced by the Inca quipus (ropes and knots of different colors that the Incas used to store information, records of crops, population censuses, from infants to 80 years blind, taxes, etc.) reference.

The difference between a craftsman and an artist is where they sell their works, the artisan sold to tourists and the artist in the galleries to collectors. The artists who make Inca iconography are not considered craftsmen, if not "Indian Abstract" in the case of the artists mentioned above. It is true what you say, most of which are works of traditional culture are considered craftsmen. This is because the artists are not typical art as you may have noticed in the pictures. Usually this

applies to all countries, but the craftsmanship is very nice and very decorative. It is nothing less or ugly take home crafts is a matter of taste.

Flor Thanks for your question, I hope my answer clarified your doubts. Augusto
